[Solved] How to reference an existing footnote?

Hello all, I just started using open office and ran into a little problem.

How do I use the same footer #, if i wanted to cite more then one sentence/quote from the same source.

So for example; the mass of the earth is 5.9736 × 1024 kg * insert footer, is label as 1.
the circumference of the earth is 40,075.16 km ***
***how do i insert a footer without making another entry at the bottom of the page, and have this sentence also labeled as 1.

Welcome to the forum. You meant footnotes, footers are something else.
You can do that with a little trick: select the footnote number in the text, Insert - Bookmark, give the bookmark a name, then at the place where you want to inert a footnote to the same source do Insert - Cross reference, In the list below Type, select Bookmark, select the bookmark you want to reference, select Reference, click OK.

You don't need to make a bookmark. You can directly cross reference a footnote. The only thing to do is to manually make the reference a superscript.

Thx I got. I did Insert >> Cross-Reference >> Type:Footnote >> Selection: Link i wanted to use again. The actual number is a little bigger then insert footnote and not in the upper right hand corner. Anyone know how to fix that? so it looks the same.

Select it, press Ctrl+Shift+P. In short, make it a superscript.

As I recall, you can also just copy/paste the first footnote anchor, along with it's formatting. Which is easier just depends on how easily you can locate the previous anchor.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, Acknak, but when I copied and pasted the first footnnote anchor (the superscript? =1 in my trial) I got a new superscript (=2 in my trial) and the same footnote text inserted at page bottom, but numbered 2.

You're right.

Maybe I was thinking of copy/paste of the cross-reference if you need more than two references. You have to create & format the first cross-reference, but after that, you can make more with a simple copy/paste.

I realize I have just resurrected a very old thread, but this is hit number one under Google for this issue, and the current answer has, while similar, changed.
This answer applies to OpenOffice 4.x

To link to an existing footnote from a new location the new procedure is as follows:

1. Place your cursor where you want the link to appear,
2. Menu -> Insert -> Cross reference
3. Tab "Cross-references"
4. Type -> Select "Footnotes"
5. Insert reference to -> Select "Reference"
6. Selection -> Highlight the footnote you wish to target.

Currently (Under 4.1.1) The user must manually set the reference to the footnote style, this is done by:

1. Highlight the reference in your text, not the the part in the footnote itself.
2. Menu -> Format -> Styles and formatting (or press F-11)
3. At the top of the ensuing window make sure Character Styles is selected. This is typically the second button counting from the left along the top of the window.
4. At the bottom of the window, make sure "All" is visible in the drop-down list,
5. Double click on the entry "Footnote anchor" in the window.

Note that, when you click the letter at the left of the end note, the document jumps to the original callout, not any of the additional callouts. That should be obvious, but it confused me for a while.
