Pesky vertical lines

Post by BlebNevus »

I'm running LibreOffice 7.4.4.2 on a Windows 10 computer. Lately I find that when I move my cursor around on a document, it leaves a one-character-high vertical line in place wherever I was working. A search of this forum suggests that this is due to Track Changes (Record). But I haven't started Track Changes; just to be sure, I clicked on it, but that turns it on (which shows that it had been off before). Any thoughts?

Please upload a small document that shows the problem. To upload a file, click Post Reply and look for the Attachments tab just below the box where you type a response.

Is it a real line or a graphical glitch? Do the lines disappear when the document is scrolled?

Thanks for these replies. At first I thought the line was left whenever I clicked on a spot in the document, but now I'm noticing it happens only intermittently. I can't figure out the pattern, if there is one. And the lines don't disappear when I scroll, but they do disappear when the document is (re)saved - hence I'm not able to upload an example. Still pretty annoying, though. And it started happening about a week or so ago without my having made any changes to my system or to LibreOffice.

Can you grab a screen shot when one appears and upload that?

OK, see attached, which includes about half a dozen vertical lines in the one paragraph.

These lines may be a display aberration. Check with manufacturer's site that you have the latest display card drivers installed for your graphics card -don't rely on Windows to do it for you.

Yet it shows up only on LibreOffice - not on my browsers or email - and only when I'm actively working on a given document.

A wild guess - is it a SKIA related issue?

Just refreshing this in case anyone else may have an idea. The problem persists....

"Refreshing" is not so refreshing when you show no response to the latest suggestions.
  • Did you check for driver updates on manufacturer's site?
    Cf. comment from RoryOF
  • Did you look into SKIA settings?
Cf. comment from robleyd. Restarting Office apps may be required to enable changes.
If you did, were there any changes at all?

It looks like for some reason the drawing of text caret isn't being done properly (edit: or cleared somehow).

You could look for other things which might redraw the window and so clear the residual lines - apart from saving - perhaps F9 which refreshes fields?

I‘m experiencing this issue as well (only on MacOS). Seems to be related to Skia. If I disable Skia (or set ForceSkiaRaster=True), the lines are gone, but it becomes unusable slow and text selections are not shown anymore.

If I scroll the document a bit, the lines disappear, but still very annoying. Did anybody find a fix for this?
