[Solved] Writer Crashing but files seem okay

Post by wgg »

Hi there, I am having an issue with 2 documents in particular that when opened cause Writer to immediately close. Everything else works as normal, I can create new files etc. I have converted both ODT files to .DOC and they open fine in Word. How can I go about rectifying this? I have re-installed OO multiple times.

In addition, whenever I try to save the blank ODT files which are the non edited templates of the two above documents as .doc OO crashes.

Thanks in advance,

Will

If you can open them in Word, can you save them as either odt or docx from there and open that version in OpenOffice?

Sadly, that seems to be another issue. Word doesn't like any ODT files. Even the ones that work in Open Office.

Give LibreOffice a try and see if you have more luck with that. There are several good reasons to switch to LibreOffice anyway, some of which are given here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
LibreOffice (Still) 24.2.7.2 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro.
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.15 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.

@wgg - Can you post the file here or on a public drive so someone can look at it?

They open fine for me too on Windows 10. Since the problem seems to be with your OpenOffice, I suggest you reset the user profile. Shutdown OpenOffice, open any folder, and enter %appdata%\openoffice\4 in the address bar near the top. Rename the user folder user_old, then restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration screen. Fill that out and test the documents.

Since opening both files in LibreOffice, they now work just fine in OpenOffice. If I get any further issues I will try the app data reset so thank you for that!
