Edit your picture first (why not online? It's free).
When you're done you can paste it in your slide.

The Impress is not a pixelgraphic editor. Use third paty softwares for that task.

Thank you, OT but any chance anyone could point out an easy tutorial, or how to do that online (i. e. fade the image borders on some other program for presentation)?

Do you want a dynamic (animated) fading in the Slide Show?
Or you only want to edit the shade of the static border?

On LibreOffice it is easy to "fade" borders of an image. Think about an animation as well.
