[Solved] "Locked for editing" message; can't save

Post by 08javelin17 »

I’m unable to access my original file. Can only update my copy but then can’t save.
What’s happening?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

We need more details. Is the original on your hard drive or somewhere else?
What error message when you try to save?
Do you try to save on your HD on a standard place like My documents?

When I try to open my original it says that I can’t cause it’s being edited… and not by me. It’s on my laptop within “my documents” folder.
I’m forced to open a copy as per the instructions given. I can update my copy but can’t save under any other name.

Save your open files and close OpenOffice completely.

Open Windows File Explorer from the taskbar.
Select View > Options > Change folder and search options.
Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.

Navigate to your documents folder and delete any files with names like .~lock.yourfilename.ods# or .~lock.yourfilename.odt# Note the starting dot.

Restart OpenOffice and try opening your file.

Usually caused by an improper shutdown of OpenOffice. See this post for a bit more information on lock files.
