[Solved] Crashing on Spreadsheets

Post by dave_t »

Hello, I use OpenOffice Calc every day. Been using it for many years and have built many spreadsheets. Currently have version 4.1.6. Suddenly, starting yesterday, when I open an existing document or start on a new one, I always crash after about 30 seconds with an "unexpected error". It prompts me to do the recovery, then says it was successfully recovered. If I then open it, I get the same problem. This happens on all my spreadsheets.

I then downloaded the latest version 4.1.11 and attempted to run the setup. After accepting all the defaults, it then crashed. I just tried Writer and don't seem to have a problem with that module.

I use Windows 10 64-bit version 21H1. I have 32 GB RAM and plenty of disk space. Please advise on how to resolve this. Thanks.

Well, there are more and more reports in the forum about such issues with OpenOffice.
Try LibreOffice, at least a portable version first to check if it does better. It is much more actively developed.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the *EDIT button if your issue has been fixed.

I didn't realize OpenOffice went unsupported by Oracle until I just now read it. So all of my spreadsheets / macro code should still be compatible with LibreOffice?

The developer of the AOO is the Apache today. The development is very slow.

The ODF is an International Standard for the documents of the office suites. (Open Document Format) It means a long tyme compatibility for the documents. The ODF is the native file type of both office suites. The AOO uses the ODF 1.2 extended version. The LO can handle it, but the default file types are based on the ODF 1.3 version. (You can switch back the LO to the 1.2 Extended or to any older version of the ODF. The recent AOO version can not handle the ODF 1.3.)

About the macros:
The StarBasic is same in the AOO and LO. The other programming languages what AOO and LO support are same.
Maybe the version of the built-in Python environment is different. (It is not matter if you use the Basic.)

The API-s of the LO and AOO have more than 99% compatibility. There are some deprecearted API functions in the LO. (API: Application Programming Interface.)

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.
