I created a text file with a password. It worked fine. I saved the file to a brand new zip drive. Used the same password. Since then every time I try to open the file it starts to open, shows up on the screen, I can see my file, then the whole OpenOffice crashes and closes. I NEED to recover this file. HELP!!
Edit: Changed subject, was OpenOffice Crashes

Can you upload or share it here?

Or try LibreOffice, at least a portable version if you don't want to install it for good.
If you move it on your HD before opening, does it help?

If you really use an iOmega Zip drive, try to copy your file to more modern storage and open from there. With a large file it may be that a modern OS misinterprets the timings of the drive and times out when the application also takes some time to create a lock file and to decrypt the source.

In rare cases this may also be an issue with other external storage (USB HDD, flash "thumb drives"). The process of opening/maintaining/closing a file has more to it than what "meets the eye". It is a good practice to use fixed (non-removable) storage for files you are actively working on. Cf. Hagar's suggestion to "move it on your HD".
